Live broadcast TV is here to stay. Despite recent changes in how viewers consume media content, live linear TV remains a big part of how a lot of us still watch television.
Recently, the rise of Netflix, Hulu, and a slew of other video-on-demand offerings has put the predominance of live TV into question, but in reality, many viewers still depend on live linear TV broadcasts for news, weather, sports and original programming. In fact, sports channels are one of the major factors currently preventing a significant number of cable subscribers from cutting the cord, so to speak.
Over-the-top services offering live TV are not new, but they come with challenges. When looking for a live linear streaming solution, today’s operators want something that is both scalable and robust, supporting large audiences. When dealing with live content as delicate as a sporting event, for example, it becomes crucial to be able to support heavy traffic, as a crashed broadcast or cut feed can be devastating not only to the audience but to the operator as well.
In order to offer a reliable live TV streaming experience at scale, more and more operators are opting for the elasticity of the cloud, which can dynamically increase or decrease capacity to better support traffic spikes and heavy usage.
For these reasons, we are proud to announce a joint Kaltura – AWS Elemental solution for delivering live TV from the cloud, from headend to user experience, offering a fast time to market with a configurable and automated setup.
A large sports media company in the Middle East and one of Asia’s largest service operators have each implemented different components of the joint solution.
The joint solution includes complete live TV capabilities, as well as a full suite of time-shifted TV features including catch-up, start-over, in addtion to multi-DRM, integrating between the Kaltura TV Platfrom and AWS Elemental Delta origin capabilities.
The solution consists of AWS Elemental Live for live transcoding; AWS Elemental Delta for just-in-time packaging, encryption and origin services; and the Kaltura TV platform to offer a single management interface including Cloud DVR scheduling and business rule management. The solution also includes Kaltura uDRM for integrated multi-DRM key management with support for all major DRM schemes including Widevine Modular, PlayReady with Smooth Streaming, MPEG-DASH Common Encryption, and Apple FairPlay.
The joint solution leverages the AWS Elemental Live platform for scalability and operational ease – and offers real-time transcoding and packaging capabilities, along with Kaltura’s leading content management, user and device management, and business management capabilities.
With such a diverse and modular offering, it allows operators of all sizes to offer a reliable and scalable cloud-based live TV solution, capable of withstanding large audiences and heavy traffic while providing market-leading features to their viewers.
Kaltura and AWS Elemental will showcase the joint solution and its features during this year’s IBC conference on each company’s stand.
